Pamplemousses botanical garden
The Royal Botanical Gardens of Pamplemousses are very popular with visitors. The gardens date back to 1735, during the French period. Here you will see a large collection of exotic and indigenous plants in excellent surroundings. Among the most peculiar specimens are the giant Victoria regia water lilies, whose origins are in the Amazon, and the talipot palm- known to bloom once every 60 years before dying. At the Casela Bird Park, you can see some of its 140 bird species, including the rare Mauritian pink pigeon. Shopping at the Caudan Waterfront includes famous international fashion brands and fine jewellery shops . Domaine Les Pailles
Nestling in the Pailles Valley, Domaine Les Pailles takes you back in time to recapture the charming ambiance of an old estate: beautiful colonial architecture, a small ox-driven sugar mill, horse carts trotting along the alleyways and the finest restaurants for a memorable culinary experience.


Chamarel
A unique feature in Mauritius is Chamarel, an area of undulating land stretching in contrasting layers of colour, an patches of blue, green, red and yellow earth, all believed to be the results of weathering.


Casela Bird Park
Mauritius is well known to ornithologists and the Casela Bird Park is set in the area of Black River, and stretches over 20 acres. There are more than 140 varieties of birds, from 5 continents. The main attraction is the Mauritian Pink Pigeon, one of the rarest birds in the world.


Le Domaine de l'Ylang Ylang
The beautiful flower of Ylang Ylang with it's fragrant yellow flowers, is grown in a plantation called Le Domaine de l'Ylang Ylang. Here the perfume is distilled over panoramic views over the bay of Vieux Grand Port, where the neighbouring islets can be seen.


Domaine les Pailles
Mauritius has a wealth of activities orientated around it's environment. A nature park close to Port Louis, Domaine les Pailles, covers 3000 acres at the foot of a mountain range. There are deer and rare birds in the park, and if you like a bit of adrenaline, Land Rover 'safaris' and quad biking are also available.


L'Aventure Du Sucre museum
Visit L'Aventure Du Sucre museum home to the former Beau Plan sugar factory. Great for a family day out the museum tells the story of the history of Mauritius from slavery, the rum trade and much more. Founded in 1797 the factory ceased trade in 1999. You will still find the machinery in place and some of the factory former workers. For kids there are interactive displays, videos and quizzes to keep them amused. At the end of the visit you will get the opportunity to satisfy your sweet tooth and get to taste up to 15 varieties of unrefined sugar.


Shopping at Curepipe
If designer shopping outlets is what you are looking for, then a trip to Curepipe is well worth the visit. This is the islands main urban centre, and is worth a stop if travelling through it on route to somewhere else! It's located in the centre of the island between Port Louis and the airport.


Mahebourg Village
Mahebourg is a village which is worth a visit, especially if staying in the south east of the island. It's still one of the islands main fishing villages, and you are at leisure to wonder round the market stalls. If you are staying at the Shandrani, you can even hire a bicycle and cycle there!
